Behind-the-Scenes Contacts Between PTI and Authorities Emerge After High-Level Islamabad Meeting
By Tahir Shah :

A recent meeting involving senior government officials and leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has triggered fresh political debate in Islamabad, amid reports that the discussions went far beyond security matters and formed part of wider backchannel efforts aimed at easing tensions between the party and the establishment.
The meeting, held on May 14 at the Islamabad residence of PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, brought together Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, according to sources familiar with the development.
Although some official accounts suggested the talks focused mainly on Pakistan’s worsening security situation and rising concerns over militancy, insiders said political issues linked to jailed former prime minister Imran Khan dominated much of the conversation.
Sources said the meeting formed part of ongoing informal contacts aimed at lowering political tensions and exploring possibilities for broader understanding between PTI and state institutions after months of confrontation and political uncertainty.
According to individuals familiar with the discussions, PTI representatives raised concerns over restrictions on meetings with Imran Khan, who remains incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. Party leaders reportedly sought improved access for Khan’s family members and senior PTI officials, arguing that continued limitations were further intensifying the political climate.
The talks also reportedly included discussions regarding medical access and humanitarian concerns relating to the former prime minister. Sources said PTI leaders warned that public frustration within the party’s support base could grow if communication barriers surrounding Khan remained in place.
People aware of the meeting said the choice of venue itself carried political significance. Barrister Gohar’s residence has previously been used for sensitive political contacts and is considered by some within political circles as a trusted channel for quiet engagement between PTI and state authorities.
One source familiar with the discussions said that if the meeting had been purely about security matters, “both the participants and the location would likely have been different,” indicating that broader political calculations were involved.
At the same time, officials representing the state side reportedly conveyed their own concerns during the talks, particularly regarding PTI’s political strategy, rhetoric and future conduct. Sources described the discussions as an exchange of “concerns and red lines” from both sides rather than formal negotiations.
Those familiar with the engagement rejected suggestions that either side entered the talks under pressure. According to insiders, the purpose was to create space for communication at a time when Pakistan’s political environment remains deeply polarised.
The development comes as the country continues to grapple with political instability following the arrest of Imran Khan and the subsequent crackdown on PTI leaders and supporters. Relations between the party and the establishment have remained strained since Khan’s removal from office through a parliamentary vote of no confidence in 2022.
Analysts say any signs of renewed communication between PTI and the authorities are likely to attract intense political attention, particularly as speculation continues over the possibility of political reconciliation or a reduction in tensions ahead of future electoral and legal developments.
Sources also claimed that recent public remarks and social media statements by Aleema Khanum may have complicated ongoing efforts to improve the atmosphere. According to insiders, some behind-the-scenes proposals, including the possibility of allowing more family meetings with Imran Khan, were negatively affected after the statements emerged online.
Neither the government nor PTI has publicly disclosed full details of the discussions, and no formal agreement has been announced. However, political observers believe the meeting signals that communication channels between rival stakeholders remain open despite continued public confrontation and deep mistrust on all sides.
