Punjab Moves Firearms Licensing Online with NADRA Biometric Integration
By Tanveer Ahmed :

The National Database and Registration Authority has introduced a simplified digital system for obtaining firearms licences in Punjab, allowing applicants to complete the process online with biometric verification through a mobile application.
Under the new arrangement, citizens can submit applications via the official licensing portal and verify their identity using the Pak ID app, removing the need for in-person procedures that were previously required.
Officials say the move is aimed at streamlining the licensing process and improving transparency by integrating digital verification systems. The initiative follows earlier steps by the provincial government to phase out manual and paper-based systems.
In November last year, the Punjab Home Department suspended all manual licensing and renewal processes, directing applicants to shift to a fully computerised system. Authorities also withdrew previous instructions governing older procedures, while offering existing licence holders a final window to convert their documents into the updated format.
The department has since sought detailed reports from regional officials on the progress of licence digitisation and enforcement efforts. These include updates on the number of licences converted, as well as actions taken against illegal weapons as part of a wider de-weaponisation campaign.
Officials say the transition to a fully digital system is intended to strengthen oversight, improve record-keeping and support broader efforts to regulate firearms across the province.
