Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has approved the introduction of electronic tagging for all vehicles, including motorcycles, as part of a broad package of new security measures.

The decision was taken during a high-level law and order meeting chaired by the chief minister, where officials agreed to implement electronic tags (e-tags) across the province to strengthen monitoring and enhance public safety.

Maryam Nawaz has also directed authorities to present a comprehensive micro-security plan within seven days.

Cybercrime Unit and Online Safety Measures

The meeting approved the creation of a dedicated Punjab cybercrime investigation unit, along with a specialised cell to support women and children affected by online offences.

District-level online crime centres are also to be established, while the chief minister has given the green light for the appointment of a head of the new cybercrime unit.

Border Controls and Surveillance

Officials were instructed to strictly enforce restrictions on movement through non-traditional provincial entry points.

The installation of searchlights at key entry routes and the deployment of drone surveillance systems were also approved. Rooftop monitoring at check posts will be strengthened, and immediate steps will be taken to procure advanced drone defence systems.

Measures to curb unauthorised drone activity were also discussed during the session.

Law Enforcement and Public Security

The chief minister directed law enforcement agencies to continue combing operations aimed at identifying criminals and suspected militants.

Enhanced training and modern equipment will be provided to the Riot Management Police (RMP) to improve crowd control capabilities.

Participants also agreed to develop security standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the observance of Youm-e-Ali after consultations with religious scholars.

Addressing the meeting, Maryam Nawaz stressed that evolving methods of warfare demanded updated and proactive security strategies.

“We cannot afford complacency,” she said, calling for coordinated and collective efforts to counter terrorism and maintain law and order across the province.
