Pakistan’s Power Division has issued an urgent warning to electricity consumers after reports surfaced that individuals were collecting electricity bill details and QR codes through unofficial platforms under the guise of subsidy registration schemes.

The warning was shared by Power Division spokesperson Zafar Ayub through a post on X, accompanied by a graphic labelled “Fake” that appeared to imitate an official government subsidy registration process.

Officials cautioned the public against sharing electricity bill QR codes, subsidy information or personal details with any unauthorised website, social media page, paper form or digital platform not officially approved by the government.

According to the ministry, some individuals are allegedly attempting to misuse electricity bill data for unauthorised and potentially illegal activities. Authorities said the matter had already been reported to relevant law enforcement agencies for further investigation.

The Power Division stressed that consumers applying for electricity subsidies or related government support programmes should only use official communication channels and verified registration systems announced by the authorities.

Officials warned that sharing QR codes from electricity bills could expose consumers to fraud, identity misuse or unauthorised access to sensitive account information. They urged the public to remain cautious about online posts or messages claiming to offer subsidy registration services outside official government procedures.

The advisory comes at a time when Pakistan is witnessing a growing number of digital fraud cases linked to fake government schemes, phishing attempts and unauthorised data collection campaigns targeting consumers through social media and messaging platforms.

Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly advised citizens not to share sensitive utility account details or personal information with unverified sources, particularly during periods when government relief or subsidy programmes are being discussed publicly.
