Iran says no deal expected after single round of talks with US

Iran has said it did not expect to reach an agreement with the United States in a single round of negotiations, following the conclusion of high-level talks in Islamabad.
Foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told Iranian media that while no deal had been finalised, both sides had made some progress, reaching an understanding on several issues. However, he noted that differences remained on “two to three important” points.
His remarks came after US Vice President JD Vance said the talks had ended without an agreement, highlighting continued gaps between Washington and Tehran.
Mr Baghaei said the negotiations had taken place after more than a month of conflict and in an atmosphere marked by mistrust, making a quick breakthrough unlikely.
“These negotiations were held after 40 days of imposed war and in an environment of suspicion,” he said, adding that it was unrealistic to expect a comprehensive agreement in a single meeting.
He indicated that diplomatic engagement would continue, saying Iran would remain in contact with Pakistan and other regional partners as efforts to resolve the crisis move forward.
The talks in Islamabad were part of a broader push to build on a fragile ceasefire announced earlier this month after weeks of hostilities, with Pakistan playing a central role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
