Tourism Expo Japan 2025, the country’s largest combined travel trade exhibition and consumer travel festival, has officially opened in Aichi Prefecture near Nagoya, marking the first time the event is being hosted in the region. The move reflects Japan’s broader strategy to distribute tourism benefits beyond major gateway cities and strengthen regional economies.

The event is jointly organised by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA), the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), and the Japan Travel and Tourism Association. It serves as a major platform for international buyers, domestic tourism boards, airlines, hospitality groups, and travel technology providers to connect with trade partners and consumers under one roof.

Focus on Regional Dispersal and Outbound Revival

Held under the theme “Travel for Discovery and New Encounters,” the 2025 edition places strong emphasis on destination diversification and regional dispersal. Organisers aim to encourage travellers to explore lesser-known areas across Japan, helping ease congestion in popular cities while stimulating growth in rural and secondary destinations.

While Japan welcomed a record 36.87 million international visitors in 2024, the outbound travel segment remains in recovery mode at around 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels. Industry leaders at the expo highlighted the need to rebuild outbound demand through new international partnerships, promotional campaigns, and improved air connectivity.

JATA Chairman Hiroyuki Takahashi noted that the expo is designed to reignite enthusiasm for travel by offering visitors fresh ideas, immersive experiences, and meaningful cross-cultural engagement opportunities.

Strengthening Regional Impact

JNTO President Atsumi Gamo acknowledged the strong rebound in inbound tourism but stressed that sustainable growth depends on spreading visitor flows more evenly across the country. To support this effort, JNTO has arranged familiarisation tours for 250 travel trade and MICE professionals from Asia, Europe, and North America. These agents will participate in 12 curated routes across the Chubu and Hokuriku regions from September 27 to 30, introducing them to cultural heritage sites, culinary traditions, industrial tourism, and nature-based experiences.

The choice of Aichi Prefecture as host is strategic. Known as a major manufacturing and industrial centre, Aichi is also home to historical landmarks, traditional festivals, coastal scenery, and distinctive regional cuisine. Takashi Ando, Chairman of the Aichi Prefectural Tourism Association, expressed confidence that hosting the expo will elevate Aichi’s profile not just as a business hub but as a compelling travel destination.

Expanding Business and Consumer Engagement

Tourism Expo Japan uniquely combines B2B networking with consumer-focused programming. Trade days facilitate contract negotiations, partnership building, and destination marketing discussions, while public days allow travellers to explore global travel options, attend cultural showcases, and interact directly with tourism providers.

The event also features seminars on sustainable tourism, digital transformation in travel, aviation route development, and strategies to attract high-value travellers. Exhibitors range from national tourism organisations and regional governments to airlines, cruise lines, hotels, and travel technology startups.

Looking Ahead to 2026

The next edition, Tourism Expo Japan 2026, is scheduled to take place at Tokyo Big Sight from September 24 to 27. When the event was last held at the same venue in 2024, it attracted 182,934 visitors and 1,284 participating companies and organisations, underscoring its status as one of Asia’s largest travel gatherings.

As Japan continues balancing record inbound demand with regional revitalisation goals and outbound recovery efforts, Tourism Expo Japan 2025 stands as a pivotal platform shaping the future direction of the country’s tourism industry both domestically and on the global stage.
