Pakistan’s envoy to the United Nations has called for urgent de-escalation and renewed diplomacy amid rising tensions across the Middle East, warning that overlapping crises risk further destabilising the region and beyond.

Addressing a Security Council session, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the situation remained “extremely volatile”, stressing the need for strict adherence to international law and the principles outlined in the UN Charter.

He told that multiple conflicts unfolding simultaneously required immediate attention, adding that restraint and responsible conduct were essential to prevent further escalation. He emphasised that diplomacy must remain the primary tool for resolving disputes.

The ambassador highlighted the ongoing crisis in Gaza, noting that while a ceasefire had brought some relief, the situation remained fragile. He said continued violence had resulted in significant civilian casualties and warned that humanitarian assistance reaching the area was still insufficient to meet urgent needs.

He also expressed concern over developments in the West Bank, pointing to what he described as increasing violence, continued expansion of settlements and legislative measures that he said violated international law.

Broader regional tensions, he added, were having global repercussions, particularly through disruptions in critical trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that instability in the waterway was affecting economies worldwide, including Pakistan’s.

Reiterating Islamabad’s position, Mr Ahmad said the issue of Palestine remained central to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. He argued that a just and durable resolution depended on the establishment of a Palestinian state in line with international agreements.

He concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s support for diplomatic engagement, saying the country would continue to play a role in facilitating dialogue at a time of heightened uncertainty.

Diplomats at the meeting echoed concerns that without sustained efforts to reduce tensions, the region could face further escalation, with consequences extending well beyond its borders.
