Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated by security after a gunman opened fire near the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington on Saturday night.
According to officials, the suspect, armed with a shotgun, attempted to breach security at the venue, the Washington Hilton. A United States Secret Service agent was struck during the incident but was protected by body armour and escaped injury.
Authorities said the attacker was quickly apprehended, and all senior officials, including the president, vice president and cabinet members, were confirmed safe.
Trump later described the suspect as a “would-be assassin” and suggested the individual acted alone. “In my opinion, he was a lone wolf,” he said during a press briefing at the White House.
The shooting caused panic inside the venue, with hundreds of attendees taking cover under tables as armed security personnel entered the hall and evacuated key figures. The event, attended by around 2,600 guests, was subsequently cancelled.
Senior officials, including Marco Rubio and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., were also escorted to safety amid the chaos.
The incident drew international reaction, with Shehbaz Sharif expressing shock and relief that no major injuries were reported.
Saturday’s event marked Trump’s first attendance at the correspondents’ dinner as president. The venue has historical significance, having been the site of the Assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan 1981, when former president Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded outside the same hotel.
The latest incident comes after previous threats to Trump, including a 2024 campaign rally shooting in Pennsylvania and another foiled attempt in Florida, underscoring ongoing security concerns around high-profile political events in the United States.
