A fresh wave of severe tensions swept across the Middle East on Saturday when the United States and Israel announced strikes on Iran.

In response, Iran not only launched attacks on Israel but also carried out missile and drone strikes against several US allies across the region.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and other countries condemned the Iranian attacks, warning Tehran that they reserve the right to defend themselves.

Several of these states host American military bases or personnel. Against this backdrop, reports began emerging on Monday that three US aircraft had been destroyed in Kuwait.

Amid the atmosphere of war, many initially assumed the jets had been downed by Iranian fire. However, that was not the case.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its three F-15E aircraft were destroyed in Kuwait in what it described as a “friendly fire incident”.

Kuwait’s Position

Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence confirmed in a statement on Monday that several US aircraft had crashed.

The ministry said the crews were unharmed and had been transferred to hospital for medical examination.

It added that Kuwait was cooperating with its American ally to determine the cause of the incident.

Investigations now appear to have been completed, with CENTCOM issuing a detailed statement.

What Did CENTCOM Say?

CENTCOM stated that its three F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft, which were participating in operations linked to Operation Epic Fury in Iran, were destroyed in Kuwait during a “friendly fire incident”.

According to the statement, during active combat involving Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones, Kuwait’s air defence systems mistakenly shot down the US Air Force jets.

CENTCOM said all six crew members ejected safely and are in stable condition.

The command also thanked Kuwaiti defence forces for their support during the ongoing operation.

Capabilities of the F-15E Strike Eagle

According to the US Air Force, the F-15E Strike Eagle is designed to conduct both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.

The aircraft can operate at low altitude and in all weather conditions, day or night.

It is built for long-range strike operations and is equipped with the APG-70 radar system, enabling it to identify and engage ground targets from considerable distances.
