England Edge Past New Zealand to Keep Pakistan’s Semi-Final Hopes Alive
By Sadia Khan :

England secured a tense four-wicket victory over New Zealand in their Super Eights encounter on Friday, a result that keeps Pakistan’s flickering semi-final hopes alive heading into their final group match against Sri Lanka.
Chasing 160 for victory at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium, the two-time champions stumbled at regular intervals before Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed guided them home with an unbeaten 44-run partnership for the seventh wicket. England reached the target with three balls to spare.
New Zealand’s Innings Falters
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner’s decision to bat first backfired as his side managed only 159 for seven against a spin-heavy England attack. Middle-order batter Glenn Phillips top-scored with a 28-ball 39, while openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen contributed 35 and 29 respectively, but the innings never gained sustained momentum.
England’s spinners dominated proceedings. Will Jacks, Adil Rashid, and Rehan Ahmed claimed two wickets each, with Liam Dawson providing support with one. The disciplined bowling performance restricted New Zealand to a total that always felt below par on a surface offering some assistance to the slower bowlers.
England’s Rocky Chase
England’s reply began shakily. Rachin Ravindra tore through the top order, claiming three wickets for just 19 runs in his four overs. Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Glenn Phillips each took one wicket as England slipped to 116 for six, still needing 44 runs for victory.
With the required rate climbing and the lower order exposed, the match hung in the balance. But Jacks and Rehan produced a calm and aggressive counter-attack. Jacks remained unbeaten on 32 from just 18 deliveries, striking four fours and a six, while Rehan smashed 19 not out from seven balls, clearing the boundary twice and adding a four.
Their unbroken partnership snatched victory from a position of genuine uncertainty and ensured England maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament.
Tournament Implications
The result has significant ramifications for Group 2. England have already secured their semi-final berth with an unblemished record. New Zealand, with three points from three matches and a net run rate of 1.390, must now wait anxiously.
Pakistan remain mathematically alive. The Green Shirts occupy third position with one point from two games and a net run rate of negative 0.461. To advance, they must defeat co-hosts Sri Lanka in Kandy on Saturday by a substantial margin.
Statisticians calculate that Pakistan need to win by approximately 65 runs or chase down the target within 13.1 overs to overhaul New Zealand’s superior net run rate. A narrow victory would not suffice, as New Zealand would then join England in the semi-finals.
The equation is straightforward but daunting: Pakistan must produce their most convincing performance of the tournament against a Sri Lankan side playing for pride on home soil. Anything less, and their campaign will end at the Super Eights stage.
