Islamabad: Two Polish pilots, Sebastian Kawa and Sebastian Kot Lampart, have made aviation history by becoming the first to fly a glider over the towering 8,611-meter peak of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. Their remarkable achievement not only showcases their skill and determination but also highlights the potential for future glider flights over the world’s highest mountains.

A Historic Achievement

The historic flight, which took place around K2, marks a significant milestone in both aviation and mountaineering. According to local authorities, this is the first time anyone has achieved such a feat, demonstrating human ingenuity and the spirit of exploration.

Preparation and Arrival in Pakistan

The journey to this achievement began with meticulous planning and preparation. With the support of their friends, Kawa and Lampart transported their ASH-25 glider from Poland to Pakistan using a trailer. The challenges posed by the region’s fast winds added complexity to the mission, as noted by Mountain Challenger Expedition Trek and Tours in Pakistan and J. Muhammad Iqbal.

Licensing and Test Flight in Pakistan

Upon arriving in Pakistan, the pilots completed the necessary procedures to obtain a flying license from local authorities in the Shigar district. This license allowed them to fly over the majestic Karakoram mountains. To ensure their readiness, they conducted a test flight from Skardu airport, reaching an altitude of 4,600 meters. This crucial step confirmed the glider’s performance and their preparedness for the main flight over K2.

The Historic Flight Over K2

On the day of the historic flight, the Polish duo successfully flew their glider over the summit of K2. The two-seater Schleicher ASH 25 glider, equipped with essential oxygen supplies and a small emergency engine, was towed into the air by a car before embarking on its groundbreaking journey. This monumental achievement in aviation history underscores the pilots’ exceptional skill and the potential for future glider flights over some of the world’s highest peaks.
