PTA issues cybersecurity advisory on strong passwords

Lahore: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has urged internet users to adopt stronger cybersecurity measures to safeguard their online accounts and reduce the risk of digital fraud.
In a recent advisory, the telecom regulator highlighted the importance of activating two-factor authentication (2FA) on digital platforms, including social media, email services, and online banking applications, to provide an additional layer of security against unauthorized access.
The PTA advised users to create strong and unique passwords for every account rather than reusing the same credentials across multiple platforms. According to the authority, password reuse increases the likelihood of cybercriminals gaining access to several accounts if one set of login details is compromised.
Use strong, unique passwords
The regulator emphasized that robust passwords play a vital role in protecting personal information and maintaining online security. It recommended using a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters when creating passwords.
Users were also cautioned against incorporating easily identifiable personal details, such as names, birthdays, or phone numbers, into their passwords, as such information can be exploited by cybercriminals.
The PTA further advised citizens never to share their passwords with others and to update them periodically as a precautionary measure against potential security breaches.
In addition to password protection, the authority encouraged the use of biometric authentication methods, including fingerprint and facial recognition features, wherever available.
Awareness key to combating cybercrime
The advisory comes as concerns continue to grow over cybercrime, phishing scams, account takeovers, and identity theft both in Pakistan and around the world.
Cybersecurity specialists frequently identify weak passwords as one of the primary reasons online accounts are successfully compromised by hackers.
The PTA stressed that improving public awareness about digital safety is essential for strengthening the country’s cybersecurity landscape. It urged citizens to remain vigilant online and take proactive steps to secure their personal and financial information.
The authority noted that following basic cybersecurity practices can significantly lower the chances of falling victim to cyberattacks and help protect sensitive data from unauthorized access.
