OpenAI launches GPT-5.5 with enhanced coding and research capabilities

OpenAI has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.5, introducing significant upgrades in coding, computer interaction and scientific research, just weeks after the release of its predecessor.
The new model is designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks with minimal human input, marking a shift towards more autonomous AI systems. According to OpenAI President Greg Brockman, the key advancement lies in the model’s ability to plan tasks, use tools and verify its own output without requiring constant user supervision.
Early benchmark results suggest notable gains in performance. GPT-5.5 achieved a score of 82.7% on Terminal-Bench 2.0, which evaluates how effectively AI systems can operate command-line tools, outperforming competitors such as Claude Opus 4.7. On broader intelligence rankings, it also edged ahead of rival systems including Gemini 3.1 Pro.
However, performance has been mixed across different evaluations. In software engineering tests, GPT-5.5 trailed behind competing models, while multilingual question-answering benchmarks showed stronger results from rival systems. Analysts say this reflects the increasingly specialised nature of AI development, where different models excel in distinct areas.
The release also introduces changes to pricing and architecture. The standard version of GPT-5.5 is priced higher than its predecessor, reflecting increased computational demands and expanded capabilities. A premium “Pro” tier has also been introduced for more advanced use cases.
OpenAI said the model represents its first fully retrained base system since earlier iterations, with updates to its architecture, training data and focus on agent-like behaviour. It also features a significantly expanded context window, allowing it to process and retain much larger amounts of information in a single interaction.
The rollout began immediately across ChatGPT and Codex platforms for paid users, including enterprise customers. OpenAI says its services now reach hundreds of millions of users weekly, with millions of developers and businesses integrating its tools into their workflows.
The rapid release cycle — with GPT-5.5 arriving just six weeks after the previous version — highlights intensifying competition among leading AI developers. As companies race to build more capable and autonomous systems, the latest launch signals a continued push towards AI that can perform complex knowledge work with increasing independence.
