Donald Trump has said a second round of talks between the United States and Iran could take place within days, even as tensions persist in the Gulf region and mistrust continues between the two sides.

Speaking to US media, Mr Trump said fresh negotiations were “possible” within the next few days, following the extension of a ceasefire that has temporarily paused hostilities. The proposed talks are expected to be linked to diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan, which has been acting as a mediator.

The cautious optimism comes amid a volatile backdrop in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has seized vessels and accused Washington of breaching the ceasefire through its continued blockade of Iranian ports.

US officials have maintained that the blockade will remain in place, with reports suggesting Tehran has been given limited time to present a unified proposal. However, Mr Trump later dismissed claims of any strict deadline, saying there was “no time pressure” on negotiations.

Iranian officials have rejected US assertions of internal divisions, with Masoud Pezeshkian accusing Washington of undermining diplomacy through what he described as threats and violations of commitments. He said meaningful negotiations could only proceed if such actions were halted.

Similarly, senior Iranian figures have insisted that any lasting ceasefire would require the lifting of restrictions affecting key trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy supplies.

Despite the tensions, Tehran has acknowledged mediation efforts by Pakistan, signalling that diplomatic channels remain open if conditions are deemed suitable.

The situation remains fluid, with uncertainty over both the timing and format of any new talks, as military activity and political rhetoric continue to shape the fragile path towards a potential agreement.
