A gunman who opened fire outside the Quran and Sunnah Academy in Jhelum, run by religious scholar Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza, was killed in a police response on Sunday. The scholar remained unharmed in the incident.

According to reports, the attack took place while Engineer Mirza was delivering a routine lecture at the academy when an unidentified armed man opened indiscriminate fire outside the premises.

Police said Constable Ahsan, who was deployed on security duty at the site, was injured in the leg during the exchange of fire. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he is receiving treatment. No other injuries were reported.

A police official said security personnel responded immediately, resulting in the attacker being neutralised before he could cause further harm. Authorities said the swift action helped prevent a potentially larger tragedy.

Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer Syed Khalid Mahmood Hamdani took notice of the incident and sought a detailed report, ordering a full investigation into the attack. He also directed officials to identify any individuals who may have facilitated the assailant.

Law enforcement agencies have begun collecting evidence from the scene, while security in and around the area has been tightened and additional personnel deployed at sensitive locations.

This is not the first time Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza has been targeted. In February this year, an attacker attempted to target him during a photo session at the same academy but was arrested on the spot. He had also been detained last year under Section 3-MPO and was later released on bail in December.
