Pakistan Urges Restoration of Strait of Hormuz Shipping at UN Amid Rising Global Concerns
By Sabeeh Zanair :

Pakistan has called for the immediate resumption of normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that ongoing disruptions are affecting global trade, energy supplies and vulnerable populations.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan’s ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the safe passage of civilian vessels and the protection of crews must be ensured without delay.
He expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East, describing the conflict as one with far-reaching consequences that should have been avoided. He reiterated that Islamabad has consistently pushed for restraint and diplomacy, including hosting recent talks aimed at promoting a ceasefire and long-term stability.
Highlighting the economic impact, the envoy said disruptions in the strategic waterway were affecting not only energy shipments but also the supply of fertilisers and other essential goods, with consequences for food security and the cost of living in countries far beyond the region.
He warned that continued escalation would deepen both humanitarian and economic challenges, while a return to stability would benefit all parties involved.
The ambassador also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for regional sovereignty and expressed solidarity with Gulf nations, stressing the importance of coordinated international efforts to maintain security and stability.
He added that Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic outreach to key stakeholders, including United States and Iran, is focused on encouraging dialogue and creating conditions for meaningful negotiations.
Reiterating Islamabad’s position, Mr Ahmad said Pakistan would continue to play a constructive role in supporting diplomatic solutions and efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region.
