Pakistan’s government has assured its coalition partners that petroleum prices will be reduced once the current economic pressures begin to ease, offering the prospect of relief to consumers facing rising fuel costs.

The commitment was made during a joint parliamentary meeting of the ruling alliance held at Parliament House and chaired by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. Senior leaders from coalition parties were briefed on recent fuel price adjustments and the factors behind them.

Officials present at the meeting said ministers explained that the latest increase in petroleum prices had been driven by exceptional circumstances affecting global markets. They told coalition partners that the government intended to pass on relief to the public once the situation stabilised.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and other allied parties.

Among those attending were Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, along with several senior lawmakers.

During the session, the finance and petroleum ministers outlined the current challenges facing the energy sector. They said the government was taking steps to maintain a steady supply of petroleum products while managing the impact of external market pressures on domestic prices.

Following the meeting, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said coalition partners had expressed confidence in the government’s policies and endorsed its approach to managing the situation.

He added that ministers had reiterated their commitment to providing relief to consumers as soon as conditions allow, while continuing to monitor developments affecting petroleum prices.

Participants also reviewed contingency planning and coordination among coalition partners in response to evolving economic conditions, stressing the need for a unified political approach to address the challenges.

Officials said the government would consider reducing fuel prices once external pressures subside, signalling the possibility of lower costs for consumers if global market conditions improve.
