The Islamabad Capital Police have successfully apprehended the perpetrators behind the murder of prominent businessman Aamir Awan, utilizing advanced artificial intelligence and digital surveillance. Addressing a joint press conference on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Inspector General of Police Syed Nasir Rizvi and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry confirmed that the case was resolved in less than a day through a coordinated technological operation.

The incident occurred late Sunday night when Aamir Awan, the owner of a private motor showroom, was targeted during an armed robbery at his farmhouse within the limits of the Shahzad Town police station. According to police reports, five armed assailants breached the premises and opened fire after Awan attempted to resist the dacoity. Despite being rushed to Shifa International Hospital, Awan succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.

Inspector General Rizvi detailed the test case investigation, which involved the formation of 17 specialized teams and the establishment of a dedicated control room. Investigators employed AI technology to synthesize massive amounts of data, including the analysis of 257 CCTV cameras across the Safe City network for forensic evidence. The operation also included the geo-fencing of six specific locations, the review of 137 call data records, and the interrogation of 93 individuals linked to the suspects’ movements.

The breakthrough led to 31 coordinated raids across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Charsadda, and Mardan. Authorities successfully dismantled the Mansoor Khan Gang, an inter-provincial criminal group known for wearing bulletproof vests during robberies. Five suspects, including two non-Afghan nationals, were taken into custody while police recovered a Kalashnikov rifle, stolen mobile phones, and cash during the arrests.

Minister Talal Chaudhry characterized the murder as a national tragedy and emphasized that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has prioritized the modernization of Islamabad’s security apparatus. Chaudhry acknowledged that while the capital police have historically faced resource constraints, the successful use of AI in this instance signals a major shift in investigative capacity. The government is currently accelerating the transformation of Islamabad into Pakistan’s first fully integrated Smart City, involving the full activation of high-definition Safe City cameras and AI-driven surveillance to manage both traffic and law enforcement.
