The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) begins on Thursday, 26 March, without its traditional opening ceremony and fireworks as the government enforces austerity measures amid concerns over a potential energy crisis linked to regional geopolitical tensions.

The tournament will open at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, where defending champions Lahore Qalandars, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, will face debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen.

New Format and Teams

PSL 11 introduces two new franchises — Rawalpindiz and Hyderabad Kingsmen — marking the start of a new phase for the league following team auctions held earlier this year.

The eight teams are divided into two groups. Lahore Qalandars are grouped with Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi. Teams within the same group will play each other twice and face teams from the other group once.

The second group includes Hyderabad Kingsmen, Multan Sultans, Islamabad United and Rawalpindiz.

Each team will play 10 matches during the league stage. The top sides will then compete in a playoff phase consisting of a qualifier and two eliminators to determine the finalists.

Match Schedule and Venues

A total of 44 matches will be played during the tournament, split evenly between Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium and the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.

Evening matches will begin at 19:00 local time, while the first game in the 12 scheduled double-headers will start at 14:30.

Prize Money and Development Awards

For the first time in PSL history, a separate financial reward has been introduced for franchise development initiatives.

The winning team will receive $500,000, while the runners-up will earn $300,000. An additional $200,000 prize will be awarded to the franchise recognised for the best player development programme.

Players from the title-winning team will collectively receive a prize of $500,000.

League Records

Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam currently holds the record for the most runs in PSL history with 3,792 runs from more than 100 appearances.

He is followed by Fakhar Zaman with 2,964 runs, Mohammad Rizwan with 2,770, Shoaib Malik with 2,350 and Rilee Rossouw with 2,287.

Among bowlers, Hasan Ali leads the all-time wicket tally with 125 dismissals, followed by Shaheen Shah Afridi with 122, Wahab Riaz with 113 and Shadab Khan with 105.

Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars are the most successful teams in PSL history, each having won the title three times. Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings have each lifted the trophy once.
