The British Council has announced Women in STEM scholarships worth at least £40,000, offering fully funded opportunities for women to pursue postgraduate studies in science and technology fields in the United Kingdom.
The initiative aims to expand opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) while encouraging greater female participation and leadership in research and innovation.
Under the programme, selected candidates will be able to pursue a one-year master’s degree at leading universities and research institutions across the UK. The scholarships are part of the British Council’s broader effort to promote diversity and inclusion in the global scientific community.
So far, the programme has partnered with 43 British universities, and around 500 scholarships have been awarded worldwide since its launch.
Funding worth at least £40,000
For the 2026–27 academic year, each scholarship will be worth at least £40,000, covering a wide range of study-related expenses.
The funding package includes:
- Full tuition fees
- Living expenses
- Travel costs
- Visa fees
- Health coverage
- English language support
Officials say the comprehensive support ensures that talented women can pursue higher education in the UK without facing financial barriers.
Opportunities for South Asian students
Globally, 90 scholarships are available for applicants from 30 countries.
Of these, 25 scholarships are reserved for candidates from South Asia, including students from Pakistan. These scholarships will be offered in collaboration with five universities in the UK.
The programme is designed to encourage more women from developing regions to enter STEM careers and contribute to innovation and scientific advancement.
British Council highlights commitment to women in science
James Hampson, Country Director of the British Council Pakistan, said the initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting talented Pakistani women in gaining access to world-class education.
He said the programme would help equip women with the skills needed to become future leaders in science, technology and research.
Meanwhile, Jane Bardsley, Global Head of Enabling Research and Science at the British Council, said the scholarship programme plays an important role in reducing barriers for women pursuing careers in STEM.
She added that increasing women’s participation in science and technology is essential for creating a more diverse and innovative research environment.
Application deadline
Applications for the Women in STEM scholarships will remain open until the end of April 2026.
Education experts say such initiatives can open major opportunities for women interested in scientific and technological fields by allowing them to study at some of the world’s leading universities.
They add that programmes like this not only support individual students but also help strengthen global research capacity and promote greater gender equality in innovation and technology sectors.
