The Punjab government has placed all major hospitals in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on high alert, directing medical superintendents to ensure the availability of medicines and round-the-clock staff presence to respond to any emergency.

In instructions issued by the provincial health department, the administrations of Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital and Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital have been ordered to strengthen preparedness across all facilities.

Authorities said emergency departments must remain fully operational 24 hours a day. Operation theatres and radiology units have also been instructed to function without interruption to handle any critical cases.

Hospitals have been told to prepare and strictly implement shift-wise duty rosters to guarantee the presence of medical and support staff at all times.

Special emphasis has been placed on trauma and surgical emergency arrangements. The availability of specialist doctors — including physicians, surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons along with nurses, paramedics and allied health workers, has been made mandatory under the directives.

The move comes as part of broader contingency planning to ensure the city’s healthcare system can effectively respond to any untoward situation.
