The Punjab government has officially launched the Widow Sahara Card Scheme 2026, a landmark welfare initiative providing financial assistance of up to Rs150,000 to widows across the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz formally announced the program, which carries a total budget of Rs4 billion and aims to provide economic stability and dignity to thousands of low-income widows. The scheme is set to roll out in February 2026, with registration open until March 14.

Financial Assistance Breakdown

Under the program, eligible widows receive direct financial support based on family size:

  • Rs100,000 – Widow with no children
  • Rs125,000 – Widow with one child
  • Rs150,000 – Widow with two or more children

Payments will be transferred through ATM cards or directly to bank accounts, ensuring transparency and eliminating any deductions. Officials emphasize that the system is designed to put money directly into beneficiaries’ hands without middlemen.

Who Can Apply

To qualify for the Punjab Widow Sahara Card Scheme, applicants must:

  • Be permanent residents of Punjab
  • Belong to low-income households
  • Have their widow status registered with NADRA
  • Not be government employees

The program uses the Punjab Socio-Economic Registry (PSER) database to verify eligibility and identify deserving families. Applicants should ensure their marital status is updated on their NADRA Smart Card before applying.

Required Documents

Widows applying for the scheme must prepare:

  • Children’s B-Forms
  • Husband’s NADRA-issued death certificate
  • Active personal mobile number
  • Proof of residence (utility bill or domicile certificate)

Authorities warn that incomplete documentation may delay approval, so applicants should gather all papers before beginning the process.

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

Digital Application Method

Eligible applicants can apply online through the official Punjab government web portal (pser.punjab.gov.pk) or mobile application. The steps include:

  1. Create an account using CNIC and mobile number
  2. Complete the household profile with accurate details
  3. Upload scanned copies of required documents
  4. Submit the application and save the reference number for tracking

Physical Application Method

For those without internet access or needing assistance, applications can be submitted at:

  • BISP/Ehsaas Centers
  • e-Khidmat Markaz (service centers)
  • Social Welfare facilitation desks

At these centers, staff assist with biometric verification, document submission, and card collection.

Verification and Timeline

Once submitted, applications go through verification by the Punjab Social Protection Authority (PSPA) and PSER databases. This process typically takes two to four weeks, checking:

  • CNIC and NADRA records
  • Husband’s death certificate authenticity
  • Residence proof
  • Income status

If approved, applicants receive SMS confirmation, and the Widow Sahara Card is issued with payment setup activated.

Impact and Significance

Government officials describe the Widow Sahara Card Scheme as a landmark step toward strengthening social welfare programs in the province. The initiative is expected to:

  • Reduce financial hardship among widows
  • Provide direct cash assistance without bureaucratic delays
  • Promote women’s empowerment in Punjab
  • Improve social security coverage for vulnerable populations

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has emphasized that “every widow in Punjab deserves respect, financial security, and equal opportunity”.

Important Warnings

Officials stress that registration is completely free, and widows should not pay anyone claiming to facilitate the process. All registrations must go through official PSPA centers or the verified online portal. Applicants are advised to avoid fake social media posts promising instant registration and to verify details through official Punjab government channels or the PSPA helpline at 1221.

Widows are encouraged to verify their eligibility carefully and complete documentation before submitting applications, as the registration window closes March 14.
