The TECNZ Trade Event 2025 brought together tourism industry professionals, inbound tour operators, destination management companies, and New Zealand travel suppliers for two days of high‑value business engagement on 9–10 April 2025 at the Viaduct Events Centre. Hosted by the Tourism Export Council of New Zealand (TECNZ), the event marked a significant evolution in the country’s tourism trade calendar, offering a dedicated platform for buyer‑seller meetings, knowledge exchange, and strategic industry partnerships.

A Standalone Platform for Inbound Market Growth

In its refreshed standalone format, the TECNZ Trade Event separated from the broader annual TECNZ Conference to focus exclusively on NZ travel suppliers and inbound travel trade professionals. The objective was to strengthen commercial ties between product providers (sellers) and inbound tour operators (buyers), helping New Zealand tourism products gain wider global distribution and competitive traction.

The format featured a pre‑scheduled appointment programme, with hundreds of focused business meetings arranged between sellers — including accommodation providers, transport and activity operators, regional tourism organisations, and experience suppliers — and key inbound travel decision‑makers from New Zealand and Australia.

Strong Industry Participation and Networking

The 2025 edition witnessed impressive engagement, with more than 380 attendees, including 105 tourism businesses representing 182 sellers and over 170 inbound tour operator staff. Exhibitors showcased a broad range of tourism products and services aimed at enhancing visitor experiences across the country.

Attendees also benefited from structured networking events, social functions, and informal meet‑ups designed to support relationship building beyond the scheduled meetings. Industry leaders highlighted the value of face‑to‑face connections in fostering trust and facilitating long‑term commercial partnerships.

Strategic Engagement and Industry Support

A key focus of the TECNZ Trade Event was facilitating meaningful dialogue between inbound operators and product suppliers. Organisers extended invitations to relevant government stakeholders and partner organisations, enabling broader discussions on policy‑level support, tourism infrastructure, quality assurance, and market trends. Representatives from agencies such as the Department of Conservation, Immigration New Zealand, Qualmark, and NZ Māori Tourism were also present, offering their perspectives on how collaborative efforts can drive sector growth.

TECNZ Chief Executive Lynda Keene emphasised that the event’s evolution reflected the tourism industry’s desire for targeted trade forums. “This year’s event creates more opportunities for tourism suppliers and regional tourism organisations to meet with inbound operators, promote their products and experiences, and secure business for future travel seasons,” Keene said as the event opened.

Enhancing Skills and Industry Knowledge

In a first for the event, TECNZ introduced an ‘Education Pass’ aimed at young professionals and back‑office staff who are not directly involved in sales and marketing but are poised to become the next generation of tourism leaders. This initiative allowed emerging talent to observe trade interactions and deepen their understanding of tourism product distribution and sales dynamics.

Each day concluded with networking evenings, giving participants informal opportunities to continue discussions, foster alliances, and build community within the sector.

Impact and Future Outlook

The success of the 2025 trade event has positioned it as a permanent fixture in New Zealand’s tourism export strategy. The high level of participation and the quality of business interactions demonstrated strong industry demand for dedicated platforms that connect sellers and inbound trade professionals under one roof. Feedback from both buyers and sellers indicates that the event generated valuable leads and expanded market insights.

Encouraged by the positive response, TECNZ has confirmed plans to continue the trade event format in future years, with enhanced appointment technologies, broader buyer representation including additional Australian travel trade professionals, and expanded support services for participants.

Strengthening New Zealand’s Global Tourism Position

The TECNZ Trade Event 2025 has reinforced the role of Aotearoa New Zealand as a connected and agile tourism market capable of building commercial momentum through strategic industry engagement. By creating a dedicated space for inbound operators and suppliers to grow their commercial relationships and share insights, the event is helping to build a more resilient and globally integrated tourism sector with long‑lasting benefits for destination growth and visitor experiences across New Zealand.
