Islamabad: The threat of polio continues to loom over Pakistan as the total number of reported cases surged to 55 on Sunday. This increase marks a worrying trend in the ongoing year, with fresh cases emerging from various regions of the country.

According to reports, three new polio cases were confirmed in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Dera Ismail Khan, Zhob, and Jaffarabad each reported one new case. In Dera Ismail Khan, six polio cases have now been recorded in 2024. Zhob has reported a total of three cases, while Jaffarabad has seen two cases so far this year.

Regional Breakdown

  • Balochistan remains the most affected province with 26 reported cases.
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported 14 cases.
  • Sindh has seen 13 cases of polio.
  • Punjab and Islamabad each reported one case.

The increase in cases highlights the urgent need for improved vaccination efforts, public awareness, and continued vigilance in high-risk areas. The federal and provincial governments must accelerate their initiatives to eradicate polio and safeguard the health of children across the country.
