A United States delegation led by Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Islamabad ahead of high-level negotiations with Iran aimed at easing tensions and building on a fragile ceasefire in the Middle East.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, received the US vice president upon his arrival in the capital.

The talks, scheduled to take place in Islamabad, mark one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between Washington and Tehran in decades and are intended to strengthen a two-week ceasefire agreed earlier after weeks of escalating conflict.

Vice President Vance is leading the American delegation, which includes senior officials from the US administration. Iran is represented by a delegation headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and other senior officials who have also travelled to Pakistan for the negotiations.

Pakistan has been acting as a facilitator for the talks, hosting both sides in an effort to help turn the temporary truce into a broader political settlement to the crisis.

The discussions are expected to test whether Washington and Tehran can move beyond the fragile ceasefire and begin negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting peace in the region.
