The federal government has released Rs1.2 billion in financial assistance to more than 32,000 transport operators under the first phase of the Prime Minister’s Fuel Package 2026, with payments delivered through a digital wallet system.

The funds were transferred to beneficiaries including bus drivers, truck operators, long-haul vehicle owners and delivery van drivers, officials said. The payments were processed through the easypaisa digital banking platform, allowing the assistance to be distributed quickly and securely to eligible recipients across the country.

The initiative is part of the government’s effort to provide relief to transport workers facing rising fuel costs. By using a mobile wallet system, authorities aim to ensure direct and transparent payments while reducing reliance on traditional cash-based distribution methods.

According to officials, easypaisa is the first digital wallet platform facilitating direct transfers to truck operators under the programme. The system is expected to expand soon to include other categories of transport workers, such as tank lorry drivers, bus operators and motorcycle riders.

Jahanzeb Khan, president and chief executive of easypaisa digital bank, said the company was proud to support the government in delivering financial assistance to citizens in a timely manner. He said digital transfers helped ensure that funds reached beneficiaries efficiently and securely.

Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja said digital payments were becoming a key component of Pakistan’s modern financial system, helping to improve transparency and efficiency while expanding financial inclusion.

She said digital platforms were enabling the government to deliver support directly to citizens more quickly and securely. The initiative, she added, was aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of building a digitally empowered and less cash-dependent economy.

Easypaisa currently has more than 59 million registered users and an extensive network of agents across urban and rural areas, making it one of the country’s largest digital payment platforms. Officials say the system is increasingly being used for government-to-person payments as authorities seek to broaden access to financial services nationwide.
