The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) will host a national conference on Green Journalism on June 3, bringing together scholars, environmental experts and journalists to discuss the growing environmental challenges facing Pakistan and the role of media in addressing them.

Organised by the university’s Department of Mass Communication, the Green Journalism Conference 2026 aims to provide a platform for researchers and media professionals from universities across the country to present their work and exchange ideas on environmental reporting and awareness.

Head of the department Dr Faisal Javaid described the event as a first-of-its-kind initiative, saying it comes at a time when Pakistan is increasingly affected by global warming and environmental degradation. He said the media, as a key pillar of society, has a crucial responsibility in highlighting environmental issues and encouraging public awareness and action.

Dr Javaid emphasised the need for dialogue on how journalists and media institutions can contribute more effectively to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Conference Secretary and Assistant Professor Dr Sikandar Zarren said the event would also encourage academic participation from emerging researchers. PhD and MPhil scholars as well as undergraduate students will be able to present their research, while students from universities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi will have the opportunity to contribute through environmental research posters.

According to the organisers, the conference will focus on a range of topics including environmental protection, deforestation, water conservation, flood prevention, eco-friendly media practices and the introduction of Green Journalism courses in universities.

The organisers said the list of selected research papers will be announced on April 15, while the deadline for submissions has been set for May 16.

Vice Chancellor Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari will serve as patron-in-chief of the conference. An organising committee comprising faculty members has been formed to oversee preparations, including Dr Sikandar Zarren, Dr Sher Juni, Rashid Sal, Saima Azhar and Saira Kazmi.
