The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has concluded disciplinary proceedings against national pacer Naseem Shah, imposing a significant fine of Rs20 million for violations of his central contract and the board’s social media guidelines. The decision follows a high-profile controversy during the opening ceremony of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11.

Disciplinary Findings

The PCB’s three-member disciplinary committee convened on March 30, 2026, to evaluate the cricketer’s response to a show-cause notice issued on March 27. Despite an “unconditional apology” tendered by the player, the committee determined that multiple clauses of his professional contract had been breached.

In addition to the financial penalty, the PCB has announced the blacklisting of Naseem’s social media adviser. The board confirmed that the player has already terminated his association with the individual, who is now barred from representing or advising any player under the PCB’s jurisdiction.

Origins of the Controversy

The incident occurred during the PSL 11 curtain-raiser at Gaddafi Stadium, which featured Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as the guest of honour. During the ceremony, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi introduced the Chief Minister to franchise owners and players.

Shortly after the event, a post appeared on Naseem Shah’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. The post was a quote-retweet of a PCB media update showing Chairman Naqvi greeting the Chief Minister. The nature of the comment sparked immediate and widespread debate across social media platforms, drawing intense scrutiny from the cricketing community.

Hacking Allegations and Player Defense

Addressing the backlash, the right-arm fast bowler initially claimed that his account had been compromised. In a clarifying statement issued following the recovery of the account, Naseem stated that the post was not a personal sentiment but the result of a security breach.

“This account of Naseem was recently hacked but now recovered successfully,” the statement read, seeking to reassure fans that the controversial post was unintentional.

Commitment to Integrity

A spokesperson for the PCB emphasized that the board remains “committed to upholding professional standards, contractual obligations, and the integrity of the game.” The heavy fine serves as a stern reminder to centrally contracted players regarding their responsibilities as ambassadors of the sport and the necessity of maintaining strict control over their digital presence.
