US President Donald Trump has suggested that Washington could seize Iran’s oil resources, including its key export hub Kharg Island, as the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran continues to escalate across the Middle East.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Trump said controlling Iran’s oil infrastructure could be one of several options under consideration.

“To be honest with you, my favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran,” he said. “Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options.”

Key export hub in focus

Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, is Iran’s most important oil export terminal. Analysts estimate that roughly 90% of the country’s crude oil shipments pass through the island, making it a critical part of Iran’s energy infrastructure.

The US had previously targeted sites on the island earlier in March. At the time, Mr Trump said military targets there had been “totally obliterated” and warned that further strikes on the facility were possible.

Any attempt to capture or control the island would represent a major escalation in the conflict and could disrupt global oil supplies.

Uranium operation under consideration

Separately, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration is considering a military operation to extract nearly 1,000 pounds of uranium from Iran.

According to the report, the proposal aims to prevent Tehran from advancing its nuclear programme, though officials have warned that such a mission would be highly complex and risky for US forces.

Mr Trump has also urged advisers to push Iran to surrender the nuclear material as part of any agreement to end the war.

Rising regional tensions

The conflict, now in its fifth week, has expanded across the region, drawing in Iran-backed groups and raising fears of a wider war.

Iran has warned the United States against launching a ground invasion and has vowed strong retaliation if its territory or resources are seized.

Meanwhile, the United States has been mobilising additional troops to the Middle East, while Washington and Israel say their operations are aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Analysts say proposals to seize Iran’s oil infrastructure or nuclear materials could significantly deepen the conflict and further destabilise global energy markets.
