The federal government has nominated senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Nehal Hashmi as the new Governor of Sindh, replacing the incumbent Kamran Tessori.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif has forwarded a summary to Asif Ali Zardari for formal approval of the appointment.

The prime minister also met Hashmi and congratulated him on his nomination. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and the prime minister’s adviser on political affairs Rana Sanaullah.

Political background

Hashmi previously served as a senator representing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz from March 2015 to March 2021 and is considered a longstanding member of the party.

The move follows weeks of speculation on social media about the possible removal of the current governor Kamran Tessori, who is affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan.

Earlier political tensions

The Pakistan Peoples Party, which governs Sindh, has previously criticised Tessori’s role as governor.

In April 2024, the party accused him of creating a political divide and widening differences between urban and rural areas of the province, urging the federal government to remove him from the post.

Despite those demands, leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan dismissed rumours of Tessori’s removal in December 2025.

The Pakistan Peoples Party has also raised concerns about what it described as the use of the Governor House Karachi for political purposes.

If approved by the president, Hashmi will assume the role of governor of Sindh, a largely ceremonial position that nonetheless carries political significance in Pakistan’s largest province by population.
