India national cricket team produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

With the emphatic victory, India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times, further cementing their status as one of the most successful sides in the format.

Chasing a massive 256-run target, New Zealand’s batting lineup struggled against a disciplined Indian bowling attack and were bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs, despite a fighting half-century from opener Tim Seifert.

Seifert’s lone resistance

Seifert attempted to keep New Zealand in the contest with a brisk 52 off 26 balls, striking five sixes and two fours in an aggressive innings.

However, the Blackcaps failed to build substantial partnerships as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner played a steady knock of 43, while Daryl Mitchell added 17, but the rest of the batting order struggled to cope with India’s bowling pressure.

Bumrah leads India’s bowling attack

India’s bowling attack was spearheaded by star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered an outstanding spell to claim four wickets for just 15 runs in four overs.

He was well supported by spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel, who picked up three wickets.

Other contributions came from Varun Chakravarthy, Hardik Pandya and Abhishek Sharma, who each claimed a wicket to complete New Zealand’s collapse.

India’s explosive batting display

Earlier in the match, India posted a formidable 255/5 in their 20 overs after being put in to bat by New Zealand.

Captain Santner’s decision to field first backfired as India’s top order unleashed a powerful batting display in front of a packed home crowd.

Openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson gave India a blistering start, putting together 98 runs in just seven overs.

Sharma was eventually dismissed on the first ball of the eighth over by Rachin Ravindra, who had him caught behind.

The opener had already inflicted heavy damage, scoring 52 runs from just 21 deliveries, including six fours and three sixes.

Samson and Kishan maintain momentum

After Sharma’s departure, Ishan Kishan joined Samson at the crease, and the pair continued India’s attacking approach.

The duo stitched together a 105-run partnership for the second wicket from just 47 balls, maintaining the aggressive scoring rate.

Samson emerged as the top scorer for India with a spectacular 89 off 46 balls, smashing eight sixes and five fours.

Kishan also played a crucial role, hitting 54 off 25 deliveries, which included four sixes and four boundaries.

Neesham strikes back

New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham provided a brief breakthrough for his side in the 16th over, dismissing both Samson and Kishan in quick succession.

He also removed India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav for a golden duck in the same over, briefly slowing India’s scoring momentum.

At that stage, India were reduced to 204/4 in 16 overs.

Strong finish for India

Following the mini-collapse, India regained momentum through a short partnership between Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma.

The pair added 22 runs for the fifth wicket before Pandya was dismissed for 18 in the penultimate over.

Pandya’s departure brought Shivam Dube to the crease, and he provided the finishing touch with an explosive cameo.

Dube remained unbeaten on 26 runs from just eight balls, hitting three fours and two sixes to push India’s total to a formidable 255.

New Zealand bowlers struggle

For New Zealand, Neesham was the most successful bowler, finishing with three wickets for 46 runs in his four overs.

Ravindra and Matt Henry managed to take one wicket each, but the rest of the bowling attack struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting lineup.

Historic achievement

India’s victory marks a historic milestone for the team, making them the first nation to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup three times.

The triumph also highlighted the team’s depth in both batting and bowling, with multiple players contributing to the commanding win.

The packed Narendra Modi Stadium erupted in celebration as the home side lifted the trophy, capping off a memorable tournament with a dominant performance in the final.
