Five Police Officers Suspended Over Alleged Custodial Torture in Karachi’s Sharifabad

Five police officers in Karachi have been suspended following allegations of custodial torture at a station in the city’s Sharifabad area, police officials said on Sunday.

The action was taken by Central Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Imran Khan after receiving reports of the alleged mistreatment of a man in police custody.

An initial inquiry, conducted by the Liaquatabad sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) on the orders of the SSP, found that four personnel from the Sindh Police’s Shaheen Force and a sentry from the Sharifabad police station were involved in the incident.

“All five personnel were immediately suspended and the [case] was closed, while further departmental inquiry is under way,” a statement from the Central District police said.

SSP Imran Khan issued a warning that such conduct would not be tolerated, emphasizing that strict action would be taken against any personnel found involved in similar incidents in the future.

Authorhave not released further details regarding the identity of the victim or the specific circumstances surrounding the alleged torture. Officials stated that additional departmental action would be taken based on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
