Maryam Nawaz Unveils Punjab’s First Web Portal to Combat Fake News

Islamabad: Taking a significant step against misinformation, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the swift launch of a dedicated web portal aimed at countering fake news and providing the public with reliable, fact-checked information.
The decision was taken to promote transparency and public trust, particularly in sensitive or emergency situations. According to government sources, each department will be responsible for updating the portal with accurate news in real-time, offering the public a reliable source of official information regarding the Punjab government and its various departments.
Secretary Home Department, Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, has tasked the Chairman of Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to develop and launch the portal within 24 hours. The move is being treated as a priority initiative in light of recent misinformation campaigns.
In addition to the web portal, the Punjab government is also considering the establishment of special emergency funds to manage wartime or crises effectively. A summary proposing the creation of dedicated funds for the Internal Security Wing has been prepared and will soon be sent to the Chief Minister for approval.
The rapid implementation of this portal and proposed emergency measures underscore the Punjab government’s commitment to combating disinformation and enhancing internal security preparedness.
Earlier, a security advisory circulated widely on social media, warning of a blast near the Wahga Border and urging residents of surrounding areas to evacuate. Later on it was declared fake by the Deputy Commissioner Lahore’s office. The fabricated message, falsely attributed to DC Syed Musa, claimed that the military had taken control of nearby routes and that multiple casualties had occurred, directing residents of DHA Phase 8, Askari 11, Paragon City, and Green City to leave with emergency supplies.
Authorities confirmed that no such incident had taken place and reassured the public that there is no cause for concern. In an official statement issued Tuesday, the DC office urged citizens not to believe in rumours, emphasizing that public safety remains a top priority and that any real emergency would be communicated through verified, official channels.
