On Saturday, police in Lahore arrested Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, following a court’s verdict sentencing him to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts.

This ruling could potentially prevent the opposition leader from contesting an upcoming national election, expected in November.

Legal experts believe the guilty verdict may eliminate Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s greatest rival in the upcoming election.

Imran Khan’s lawyer, Intezar Panjotha, stated they would file a petition against the decision in the high court. Khan’s party has called for peaceful protests in response to the arrest, but the public response has been limited so far.

This arrest comes as another setback for Khan, whose political standing has been weakened after disputes with Pakistan’s powerful military and internal party divisions.
