Officials reported that at least 10 people were killed in floods near Beijing, with the death toll from recent heavy rains in northern China reaching 30. The city of Baoding, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) from Beijing, suffered the fatalities, and 18 people are still missing. The heavy rains were brought by Storm Doksuri, a former super typhoon, which caused the most severe rainfall in the region in the past 140 years.

In response to the disaster, more than 600,000 residents out of Baoding’s 11.5 million population have been evacuated from risky areas. The torrential rain also affected provinces bordering Russia and North Korea. Beijing remains under a red alert due to geological risks like landslides caused by the bad weather.

The floods have caused significant damage to infrastructure and submerged entire districts, leading to ongoing cleanup operations. This year, China has faced a series of extreme weather events, including record-breaking heatwaves and deadly floods. In July alone, natural disasters claimed 147 lives or led to disappearances, with the majority caused by flooding and geological disasters.
